MDF (~650-800 kg/m³) is for dry interiors — furniture, partitions, ceilings, drawer fronts. HDF (>800 kg/m³) is denser with smoother edges and better screw-holding — flooring, premium furniture, painted shutters. HDHMR (High Density High Moisture Resistant) is treated for kitchens, bathrooms, and humid areas. HDFWR (Water Resistant) handles boiling-water exposure — marine, exterior, shuttering. Match the substrate to your moisture exposure; price scales with density and treatment.

Plain MDF arrives raw — you finish it in the workshop with paint, laminate, or veneer. Pre-laminated MDF arrives factory-finished with a decorative laminate already bonded — ready to install, no extra processing. Veneered MDF has real-wood veneer bonded for a premium natural-grain look. Pre-laminated is the most common choice for cabinet shutters, wardrobe doors, and modular furniture because it saves shop-floor time.

Standard Indian sheet sizes are 8×4 ft (most common) and 8×6 ft. Thicknesses span 6 mm (back panels, drawer bottoms) → 9 mm (cabinet sides) → 12 mm (light shelving) → 16-18 mm (most furniture carcasses and shutters) → 25 mm (heavy shelving and door cores). 18 mm is the most-used residential thickness. Standard MDF is NOT moisture-resistant — it swells on direct water contact and never returns to shape. For kitchens, bathrooms, and humid areas use HDMR or HDHMR. Even HDHMR is 'resistant' not 'waterproof' — always seal all cut edges with PVC edge banding or PU sealer, and never leave any MDF in standing water. In coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kochi go one grade higher than the spec sheet suggests.

Use sharp carbide-tipped blades on a router or table saw with anti-tearout settings — dull blades cause edge chipping. Seal every exposed edge immediately with PVC edge banding (heat-activated or pre-glued melamine) — raw MDF edges are highly porous and absorb humidity within hours. For painted finishes, prime exposed edges with shellac-based primer first to seal before painting, otherwise the edges drink the paint and look fuzzy.

Use coarse-thread screws designed for MDF or particleboard — wood screws split MDF edges. Always pre-drill pilot holes (about 70%% of the screw shaft diameter) to prevent splitting. For face-bonding use PVA (yellow) glue for furniture, polyurethane glue for edge joints in humid areas. Avoid contact adhesives on raw MDF — they bleed through and stain the surface. For edge joints use confirmat screws or dowels with glue for the strongest connection.

Lower emission class = less formaldehyde off-gassing = healthier indoor air. E0 (≤ 0.07 ppm) is the lowest and most premium tier. E1 (≤ 0.124 ppm) is the standard interior tier suitable for homes, offices, schools, and hospitals — the BIS minimum for Indian residential use. E2 (higher emission) is industrial / non-interior use only. CARB Phase 2 is the US benchmark comparable to E1, often seen on export-grade boards. Look for E1 minimum for any residential or commercial interior project.

Look for the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) mark plus IS:14587 (Indian MDF standard) on every panel — that's third-party assurance of bond quality and emission compliance. Eco Mark indicates environmentally sound manufacturing. CARB Phase 2 is the international low-emission badge. Premium brands like Greenpanel, Action TESA, and VIR MDF offer 10-25 year warranties on bond integrity and structural stability (warranty is against delamination, not surface damage). Always demand a purchase bill with batch number and manufacture date.
