Charcoal louvers: what you are buying
The name suggests a black wall, but in this collection charcoal is the core: a composite sheet made with charcoal, under a printed or textured face. The colours are as varied as any other louver. 1,500+ of the 3,000+ designs are brown, followed by grey (400+), white (250+) and black (200+).
By look, wood leads with 1,200+ designs, then designer patterns (700+), marble and stone (550+) and plain colours (300+).
Two formats cover most of it. There are 2,000+ narrow fluted strips, 1,300+ of them 12 mm thick, and 550+ charcoal sheets 2 ft wide, nearly all 4 mm. Between the two sit 400+ planks about 1 ft wide, most often 8 mm. Most designs are 8 ft long; 600+ come in 9 to 10 ft. Named brands with big charcoal ranges include Euro Pratik (200+), Pebble (100+), Trend Laminates (100+) and Vivre Panels (100+).
Charcoal vs MDF vs PVC
- Charcoal: handles humidity far better than MDF, and is the most common louver core we list.
- MDF: dense and solid, but it swells if it gets wet. Dry rooms only.
- PVC: the least bothered by water, usually the pick for walls near water, outside the shower area.
For a bedroom or living room, charcoal and MDF both do the job and the choice comes down to design. For a kitchen wall, a utility area or a flat that stays humid in the rains, charcoal is the safer of the two. Keep any louver clear of the hob and chimney.
12 mm strips or 4 mm sheets
The 12 mm strips are the classic fluted louver: deep grooves and strong shadow lines that give a wall real depth. The 4 mm charcoal sheets cover larger areas quickly with a wood, stone or patterned face. A thin sheet follows the wall behind it exactly, so a wavy wall will show; get the plaster levelled first, or fix over a plywood base.
Where charcoal louvers go
Living rooms, offices and bedrooms top the application tags, as with most louvers. Charcoal also turns up in wetter rooms where MDF louvers don't: 400+ designs are tagged for bathrooms, against none on MDF, and 1,400+ for kitchens. One design can carry several room tags, so these overlap. 400+ are listed for outdoor use as well.
Charcoal louver FAQs
Is a charcoal louver black?
Only if you choose a black design. Charcoal describes the core. Most designs here are wood, stone or patterned faces in ordinary colours.
Can charcoal louvers go in a bathroom?
On the dry side, away from direct shower spray, yes, and many are tagged for it. Seal cut edges and joints with silicone where water can reach.
How are they fixed?
Usually with a strong panel adhesive on a clean, level wall, often with a few pins or clips to hold them while it sets. On ceilings, screw them into a frame.
Compare and continue
Weigh up the alternatives in MDF louvers and PVC louvers. The biggest look on charcoal is in wood louvers, and the thin sheets are in 8x2 ft panels. Or see every brown louver, and the full louvers and wall panels range across all cores.
Ask to handle charcoal, MDF and PVC samples side by side at our Choolai or OMR store in Chennai before you decide.
