Two kinds of fluted laminate
Fluted laminates, which many carpenters call fluted mica, come in two quite different builds, and it helps to know which one you are looking at.
1 mm fluted decorative. About half the range (600+) is a standard 1 mm sheet with a fluted pattern, usually with a matching texture. There are thinner 0.8 mm and heavier 1.25 mm versions too. It is pressed like any other laminate and suits shutters and wall panelling.
Thicker acrylic fluted. 234 designs are acrylic, mostly 2.2 to 3 mm, with deeper, more defined ribs and usually a gloss face. Treelam, Pentone and Ultimo lead here. These need more care in pressing and cutting.
A third, smaller group is fluted glass laminate: 35+ designs from Euro Pratik, all 1.5 mm with a mirror finish.
Colours are led by grey (300+) and brown (250+), then white and beige. Texture is the most common finish (650+), then high gloss (200+). Among brands, Virgo (100+), Pentone (90+) and Treelam (85+) have the largest ranges; Wabi Sabi and Sapphire Flute are two series to look at.
Choosing and fitting fluted laminate
Run the flutes the right way
Vertical flutes make a unit look taller and slimmer, so upright flutes suit a fluted laminate wardrobe and TV backs. Horizontal flutes make a low unit, like a sideboard or reception desk, look longer. Mark the direction on the cutting list, because an 8x4 sheet cut the wrong way wastes a lot.
Plan the edges
Where a fluted face meets an edge, the ribs show in section. Decide early whether the flutes should stop at a solid edge band or a wood-look frame, and match the edge colour before pressing.
Keep them clean
Grooves collect dust and kitchen grease. A soft brush and a damp cloth run along the flutes, not across, keeps them clean. In a kitchen, keep fluted faces to the island or tall units, away from the hob.
Where fluted laminates work
76% of fluted designs carry a kitchen tag, 400+ a TV unit tag and 400+ a wardrobe tag; designs carry several tags, so these overlap. Other good spots: wardrobe shutters (one fluted shutter among plain ones looks sharp), bed back panels, reception desks and bar counters.
Fluted laminate FAQs
Fluted laminate or fluted louver?
Laminate goes on furniture and flat panels, and its fluting is shallow. Louvers are thicker strips for walls, with deep grooves. For a wardrobe front, laminate is the lighter, simpler choice; louver strips can go on a wardrobe too, but they add thickness and weight to each shutter. For a wall, louver.
Is 1 mm fluted as good as thick acrylic fluted?
It depends on the look you want. The 1 mm sheets are simpler to work with; the acrylic sheets give deeper ribs and a glassier finish.
Which colours show fluting best?
Mid tones with light coming from the side. In very dark or very pale colours the ribs are harder to read from across the room.
