What makes acrylic different
A standard laminate gets its shine from its pressed surface. An acrylic laminate has an acrylic top layer, often clear over a coloured or printed base, which gives a deeper, wetter-looking gloss and richer colour. That is why 76% of the 1,100+ designs here are gloss or high gloss.
Thickness is the other difference. 1.5 mm is the most common (450+), then 1 mm (200+) and 3 mm (150+), with some 2 to 2.5 mm. The 2 to 3 mm sheets are mostly fluted acrylics. At the thin end, Trend Laminates has a 0.8 mm acrylic range (60+ designs).
By look: solid colours (350+), marble (300+), fluted (234) and wood (100+). Among named brands, Treelam (100+), Euro Pratik (100+), Pentone (95+) and Trend Laminates (85+) carry the most. Almost every acrylic sheet here is 8x4 ft (1,100+).
Using acrylic well
Vertical surfaces, not worktops
Acrylic is softer than a standard laminate surface and scratches more easily. Use it on shutters, wardrobe doors, TV units and wall panels. On a worktop or study table, a textured laminate will look better after a year of use.
Leave the film on
Acrylic sheets come with a protective film. Keep it on through cutting, pressing and fixing, and peel it only when all the site work is done. A lot of the damage to new acrylic happens during installation.
A flat base matters
High gloss shows every ripple in the board beneath. Press acrylic onto a flat, good-quality MDF or plywood base, and ask for matching gloss edge banding.
Clean it gently
A soft microfibre cloth with plain water or mild soap. No scrubbers, no abrasive powders, no strong solvents.
Where acrylic laminates go
Kitchen shutters are the classic use, and 80% of designs carry a kitchen tag; wardrobes and TV units follow. 350+ carry a bathroom tag, a much higher share than other laminates, for vanity shutters where a glossy, easy-wipe face helps. Designs carry several tags, so these figures overlap.
Acrylic laminate FAQs
Acrylic or high gloss laminate: what's the difference?
Both are shiny. Acrylic has a deeper, glassier gloss and usually comes thicker; a high gloss laminate has a harder surface. Where looks matter most, acrylic; where daily wear matters most, high gloss laminate.
Can I do a whole kitchen in acrylic?
The shutters, yes, if you accept a little more care; on base units that get knocked daily, a textured laminate wears better. Pair them with a granite or quartz counter and a liner on the inside faces.
Does acrylic need special hinges or handles?
No, but handle-less profiles or slim handles suit the look, and soft-close hinges stop doors banging into each other and chipping the gloss.

Gloss is easier to judge in person. See acrylic samples at our Choolai or OMR store in Chennai.
